Many centuries ago, in a time long forgotten, the lands of Evalise were watched over by immortal deities. These beings were viewed as the Gods of Evalise, each governing a specific power that kept the world in harmony. Many of the mortal citizens of Evalise built places of worship in order to gain wisdom from the Gods, and in time the Gods would teach the mortals the ways of magic. Their teachings would be recorded in a large number of thick books that would be there for future generations to continue to learn and use. With the help of the Gods, the mortals were able to build grand cities around the world to house the ever growing population, and so they would flourish for many years to come. But this peace and tranquility wouldn't last forever.
Over time, dark powers began to surface from the depths of Evalise itself. These vicious being, who seemed just as powerful as the Gods of Evalise themselves, began causing chaos throughout the lands. They would pillage, murder, kidnap and rape without a second thought, and so they were all classified as demons by the Gods. Even though the Gods went to take out some of the demons themselves, they would only come back battle-scarred and ashamed. It seemed that even the Gods were only an even match for these demons that had come to wreak havoc on their home. After nearly a decade of minor fighting between the Gods and the demons, it was decided by the Immortal Council that something had to be done. If they continued doing the same thing it would only harm the mortals that they swore to protect.
After nearly a week of debating and arguing between one another, a solution was reached that all of the Gods agreed upon. They would start an all out war on the demons in order to purge them from their world once and for all. From what they had seen, most of the demons worked alone, or in small groups, and so this gave the Gods a slight advantage. They started taking the demons out one group at a time, and even though they were fierce they were no match for the shear might of every God working together. After the demons' death tole had risen to the thousands, the rest of the demons held their own meeting to figure out a way to fight off their powerful enemies. They came up with the realization that the only way they could fight back was to join forces, and so a temporary truce was formed between every group or demons.
With all of the demons banded together, and every God in one mighty squad, the true war had begun. The Gods had grown arrogant because of how easily they had taken out the small groups of demons, and they payed dearly for this. Within the first few ours of fighting, two of the Gods were gravely wounded, and with one of them being the God of Light they didn't have a whole lot of options for healing each other. Viewing their opponents as near equals, the Gods took things more seriously, but it seemed that the battle all ended in a stalemate. The fights were going nowhere fast, and it seemed that the demons were were simply enjoying all of the blood that was being spilled. The Gods were running out of options, until their leader said something that they all feared in their hearts.
There would be no end to their war if things continued like it was, and the only possible way to end it would be to use all of their powers to wipe the demons from the face of Evalise. It may have sounded easy enough, but using as much power as they needed would end up destroying the Gods themselves as well. With very little time to think, the Gods made a circle and began to channel all of their energy into one devastating attack. The demons continued to attack, but it seemed that each God had their own personal shield that kept the demons from interrupting the attack. After a decent amount of time had passed everything became silent and time seemed to stop, as a wave of light slowly passed over every part of Evalise.
As soon as the wave had come it disappeared, leaving nothing but the glowing spirits of the Gods and Demons that had fought for control of Evalise for years. However, the wave that had spread over the world had done far more than simply wipe both sides of the war from the face of Evalise. Every trace of the existence of both the Gods and the demons had vanished as well. Their existence was not mentioned in the books that taught magic, nor in the history books. They were all forgotten by the populace that they had either sworn to protect and torment, and so the world went on without them. But these powerful being weren't wiped from the plane of existence completely. Their souls lived on in the form of Runes that would one day grant mortals powers beyond their dreams.
