After the sacrifice from the Gods to wipe the demons from the face of Evalise, peace returned to the lands once more. Life for the mortals went on as if nothing had ever even happened. Magic was simply thought to have been created by forgotten wise men that spent their entire lives developing the powerful arts. This was considered a fact as new magic types were being developed by powerful sorcerers over the years. And so the books of old magic were all put into a secret library with many other things from the ancient times and sealed away from the outside world. This library was made one an island in between the two large continents that made up Evalise's mainlands. Everyone that knew about its location was, the last man taking his own life to protect the secret.
Centuries passed, and the two continents started to become very different in culture and climates. The northern continent, known as Belmourne, was known for its frigid northern mountains, fog covered forests and wind swept plains. The southern continent, known as Freylea, became known for its rain soaked southern jungle, sun filled beaches and arid deserts. Sure, that wasn't all that could be found on the continent, but they were geographic areas that made them unique. In addition, the royal families of the two continents became quite different as well. The northern royals tended to prove themselves through their skill in physical combat and hunting, while the southern royals prided themselves on their wealth and magical studies. This didn't mean that they weren't trained in the other arts, it just meant that the other things simply weren't as important to them.
With the differences set between the two types of royal families, a truce was made so that there would be no all-out war between the two countries. This didn't mean that fighting wouldn't ever happen, it simply meant that they would honor each others' differences and go about their noble, posh lives. None of the royal families had armies under their command, just a few knights that worked in the castle, and so they would hire well trained common folk to fight for them. The types of warriors that could be found throughout the world was simply astounding, and so they always had many to pick from. Of course, not all commoners were warriors. They were also traders, fishermen, priest, farmers. Really anything that you could ever think of there were people that were out their doing it.
Now that you have an idea of how the world turned out after the Gods and demons disappeared, lets get back into the important parts of the history. Well, when I say important, I mean the parts that many mortals don't know about. When the Gods and demons died, their souls fell to the earth and sunk into the ground. Over time their souls became special runes that held their consciousness, memories and powers. They would lay idle in their soil covered tombs, waiting for a mortal that they believed was worthy of their powers, or in most demons cases a way to continue to spread chaos. They may not have been able to move, but they could sense everything around the world. Even so, it was still extremely hard for them to find someone to bond with.
The first person to ever come into contact with a rune was a young man by the name of Lucien Corvinus. He had been a homeless youth for as long as he could remember, running around the cold streets of a small northern village. He had learned to fend for himself by stealing from others, and silencing them if they found out it was him. The Mist Rune had been observing his actions for some time, and even though the God within it didn't like that the young man was killing some people he understood that he only did it as a way to keep himself alive. Lucien was approached by the voice of the Mist Rune after being chased out of town for stealing food from a local militia buffet. The rune offered him an ageless body and a power beyond his dreams in exchange for his soul to become one with the rune should he ever die. Lucien accepted the terms and became the first Rune Bearer.
After bonding with the rune, a gray mist-like marking appeared his chest. The was what the Mist Rune looked like, and every other rune had its own unique marking. With his new abilities, and ageless body, Lucien traveled the world hoping to find others that had also received a rune. Many years passed as he traveled back and forth between the continents, but there was no sign of and other Rune Bearers. Over time, Lucien started to think that he was meant to always be alone. There would never be another person like him in the world, and so even though he could basically live forever he would never find a place where he belonged. He gave up hope after nearly fifty years of searching, watching the people he had seen over and over again age ever other time he saw them.
He finally stopped and settled down on an island in the middle of the ocean. This island looked like a normal deserted island, but in the thick forest within it was a vein covered stone tower that was locked by a powerful sealing spell. Lucien used the power of the rune to try to destroy the seal, and after nearly passing out he finally broke it. Inside the tower was the long lost Library of the Ancients. The entire ground floor was filled from wall to wall with old books and artifacts, second floor had a living quarters and sleeping quarters for up to about six people and the third floor had what looked to be a meeting area. The roof was accessible, and the view from atop it was simply breathtaking. You could see the shores of both the northern and southern continents, and the sunsets were to beautiful for words.
Even though Lucien was happy to have found such a wondrous place merely by accident, he didn't have time to get settled in. Within about an hours time he sensed a good eight people in the world that were just like him. It was so strange, but he didn't waste any time going to find these people. He traveled to each area where he had sensed the new rune bearers, and he found out that he was the only one that was able to sense others like them. He wondered why he was the only one that could, but he didn't feel like searching for the answer at the moment. Out of the eight Rune Bearers that he met up with only five joined his group. Two of the ones that didn't join were denied by Lucien because he sense an evil within their rune, while the other simply decided to go down his own path.
With his group put together, he had them travel to different parts of the world. When they found a place they liked they would call that place home and help out the citizens of that area in any way they could. They all chose cities or towns around the world that had a decent population, all except for Lucien. He went back to the village he grew up in only to find that most of its citizens had either left or been killed by savaged wolfs that had started roaming the area. The few that were left feared for their lives every day, and Lucien promised to keep them safe with his abilities. The Rune Bearers would each meet back up with each other about ten times a year at the tower that was seen as a second home to them all. This is were they would discuss how things were going in their part of the world.
Over time, shrines and places of worship were made for these six people, and they were viewed by many as the Gods of Evalise. Shrines for Rune Bearers other than the six were also built around the globe over time do to their help over the years or, in some cases, simply to worship some evil deity that was only rumored to exist. Most of the people in Lucien's group liked how people treated them, as well as the joy they got from helping people, but over the many years Lucien had grown to hate what he started. The villagers he swore to protect were killed by an unknown savage beast, and the village itself burnt down. All that remained was the shrine built in his honor. He hated that people viewed them all as Gods when they were no closer to being a God than the people they helped or protected.
As meeting time came, the five Rune Bearers that Lucien had brought together returned to the tower only to find a note left by where Lucien would always sit. It stated that he could no longer be a part of what he had unknowingly created. There were no goodbyes, no apologizes, just those few words and the complete disappearance of the young man that they all grew to admire, and some even consider close enough to be family. He was never seen or heard of again. The others continued doing what they had been doing, but the meetings between them became less and less until soon they never returned to the tower. Everyone went on with their lives, some still meeting with the others, but they never wanted to go back to the place that Lucien had brought them all together.
A century has passed since Lucien left the others without a word of explanation. More Rune Bearers have been born over the years, though few are seen as Gods because of their lack of time walking the lands of Evalise. Peace still reigns over the lands, but for how long will this peace hold. People must remember that not all runes are the souls of righteous Gods. There are the dark runes that hold the souls of powerful demons as well. And not every Rune Bearer is going to use their powers to do good for the world. Serenity cannot exist without chaos... If this is true than the lands of Evalise are in for a wave of chaotic activity for the centuries of nearly perfect serenity. Will you choose to fight the evil that may try to consume the lands of Evalise, or will you be the one to cause it? The choice, my friends, is yours.
